POSITION OF JUDGE
OF THE CARIBBEAN COURT OF JUSTICE

The Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission (the Commission) is inviting applications for appointment as a Judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).  The successful applicant, who will replace a retiring Judge, must possess expertise in the field of International Law including International Trade Law.  Persons who lack this expertise should not apply.  With regard to the age of applicants it should be noted that the normal age of retirement for CCJ Judges is 72.  Applicants who have been short-listed may be required to attend an interview in Port of Spain.

Qualifications

The following persons are eligible for appointment:

  • A judge who has served for 5 years or more in a court of unlimited jurisdiction in civil and criminal matters in a Contracting Party or in some part of the Commonwealth or in a civil law jurisdiction.

  • A person who has been engaged as a practitioner or teacher of law for not less than 15 years in a member state of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) or in some part of the Commonwealth or in a civil law jurisdiction.

In making appointments to judicial office, the Commission is required to have regard to the following criteria: high moral character, intellectual and analytical ability, sound judgment, integrity and an understanding of people and society.

Jurisdiction of the CCJ

The CCJ exercises two types of jurisdiction:

  1. a general appellate jurisdiction in civil, constitutional and criminal matters from those Member States of CARICOM which adopt the CCJ as their final court of appeal (at present Barbados and Guyana);
  2. a compulsory and exclusive original jurisdiction to interpret and apply the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas for all the Member States of CARICOM.

Headquarters of the Court

The Seat of the Court is located in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago but there is provision for the Court to be itinerant and hear cases in any Member State of CARICOM.

Terms and Conditions of Appointment

Full details of the terms and conditions of service of Judges of the CCJ will be contained in the letter of appointment.

Applications must be made on the prescribed application form, which may be downloaded here or may be faxed to applicants on request to the Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission at (868) 623-2225,  Ext 2241 .
